What is it about?

When plasmas are compressed by shock waves, layers may form due to differences in the physical properties of the ions and electrons present. We report experiments where ions with a range of masses are present in plasma which is compressed by a shock. The properties of the shock are analyzed and the possibility that such a shock could cause the separation of ion species is discussed.
