What is it about?

Electrospun crystalline hematite nanofibers are coated via atomic layer deposition (ALD) with a nickel oxide layer. The formation a continuous polycrystalline NiO layer introduces a surface plasmon at around 510 nm and allows for the detection of a Fe2O3 mode at 1585 cm-1 in the Raman spectra excited by 532 nm laser.

Why is it important?

ALD allows for a very fine-tuning of the deposited oxide layers. Hence, the reported results pave the way to the controlled synthesis of plasmonic oxide-based nanomaterials, as an alternative to traditional noble metals.

Perspectives

The hybrid nanofibers generated could be engineered for the optical generation and control of spin waves in spintronics.
