What is it about?
We demonstrate strongly enhanced second harmonic generation to convert infrared light to a near visible wavelength. This could be used to make miniature devices that convert the color of light, new lasers or small scale sensors based on the principle of second harmonic generation. Instead of a purely numerical model we use the concept of Fano resonances to give a simple description of the process and physics involved that enhances the process.

Why is it important?
We use a simple model to describe our measurements. This allows to predict the performance of devices based on measurable quantities. This makes future design of photonic crystal based devices much easier and helps understanding them in simpler terms. We do observe a 10,000 times enhancement of second harmonic generation in a photonic crystal which is at the time of publication the largest value reported in literature.
