What is it about?

The Laser Floating Zone method was used to obtain superconducting Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (2223) highly textured ceramic cylinders with a Tc approaching 110 K. This is the first time highly textured thin, several cm-long cylinders are obtained reliably using a CO2 Laser source and a simple chamber in an air atmosphere.

Why is it important?

This work demonstrated the viability of producing Pb-doped 2223 high Tc superconductors with reliability and high critical current density (Jc) values.

Perspectives

After this publication, work published in a good number of articles demonstrated significant improvements in superconducting properties, as well as the technological limits of this Pb-doped 2223 material.
