What is it about?

The physics of structural glasses was discussed as the thermodynamics of glass through the evolution of intermediate-range orders (IROs), in which the cage effect, bifurcation phenomenon, annealing, and phase transition were studied. Structure recovery is a local phase transition of glass toward the ground state.

Why is it important?

An ideal structural glass corresponds to the Ising spin glass introduced by Parisi. This theory is based on thermodynamics for a far-from-equilibrium system with an extremely long relaxation time to generate a new ordered state.

Perspectives

In this study, we discuss the structure and dynamics of an ideal structural glass, which was first realized using silicate glass. The results revealed the dissipative structure, α- and β-relaxations, and an ideal glass for structural glasses.
