What is it about?

This study investigates the neurotoxicity of the novel drug rutin trihydrate in combination with metformin using a zebrafish larvae model. The test solutions were prepared by diluting stock solutions with egg water, with 30 µM metformin and 9.5 µM rutin trihydrate. Zebrafish embryos were collected from breeding tanks and exposed to the test compounds from 4 to 96 hours post-fertilization (hpf) in petri plates, with 15 embryos per plate in triplicate. Group 1 was treated with rutin trihydrate dissolved in 0.01% DMSO, while Group 2 was treated with metformin dissolved in a 100 µl DMSO and 99% water mixture. Statistical analysis using SPSS showed that the rutin trihydrate-treated larvae (27.77±1.15) exhibited a significantly greater neuroprotective effect compared to metformin-treated larvae (18.0±0.68), with a statistical significance of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05).
