What is it about?

Cubic boron carbon nitride (c-BCN) compounds exhibit the superhard properties of diamond and the high temperature oxidation resistance of cubic boron nitride (c-BN). These compounds overcome the shortcomings of diamond, which is susceptible to carbonization at high temperatures, and c-BN, which has low hardness. This makes c-BCN compounds highly promising for use in metal processing.

Why is it important?

A prevalent research question in the field is how to synthesize cubic boron carbon nitride under relatively low synthetic conditions. In this study, the FeNi catalyst was utilized to synthesize c-BCN under conditions of 10 GPa and 1530 °C.

Perspectives

In this study, cubic BCN was prepared under relatively low synthetic pressure and temperature conditions. However, no single phase was obtained. This is the focus of further research: how to reduce the synthetic pressure and temperature to prepare single phase cubic BCN.
