What is it about?
Optical fibers are known for their capabilities to transfer or transmit data from one point to another. They are employed everywhere around us and are the very reason behind the high-speed internet that we use nowadays. However, the very same optical fibers can also be utilised as long-haul distributed sensors to measure changes in our environment, such as tempreature, strain, pressure, etc. Depending on the application, different optical fibers may be required to meet the application's expectations and needs. Therefore, here in our article, we employ a novel type of optical fibers and demonstrate that by filling it with different gases, we can alter the sensitivity of the sensor according to the application.

Why is it important?
The results presented in our article are highly important for applications that require variable-sensitivity distributed sensors. It means that the same fiber can be used for different applications and the sensor can be made ultra-sensitive with the usage of proper gases.
