On the spontaneous symmetry breaking of eastward propagating dipoles

What is it about?

Initialised dipole steady states are found to experience the phenomena of spontaneous symmetry breaking over time. The linear growth of the corresponding critical mode is found to decrease with increasing dipole intensity.

Why is it important?

Prior to this work, these dipole solutions were thought to be stable, based on previous numerical experiments. However, our high resolution numerical analysis suggests the opposite, showing that weak dipoles solutions are unstable.
