Why is it important?
There are numerous applications for high-power coherent radiation in the frequency range of several terahertz. Quantum cascade lasers are highly popular sources of high-power coherent radiation in the far-infrared region. Several groups around the world are actively working to lower the low-frequency limit of these lasers. Our paper highlights a fundamental reason that hinders lasing at excessively low frequencies.
Perspectives
Our results will help researchers in this area to realize limits of their possible success and to switch their energy and money to other sources of low frequency coherent radiation.
