What is it about?

The present study derives the classical similarity solutions for the thermal vortex ring, originally deduced by Scorer (1957) based on dimensional analysis, from basic principles of vorticity dynamics.

Why is it important?

The similarity solutions originally deduced by Scorer (1957) may be considered already well established by various laboratory and numerical experiments. However, as already emphasized, we should not put too much confidence on any similarity solutions derived from dimensional analysis. The possibility cannot be totally excluded that agreements with experiments so far are just coincidental.

Perspectives

The present study, by deriving the similarity solutions explicitly, suggests extensive possibilities of investigating the dynamics of thermal vortex rings by more directly examining the governing equations of the system.
