What is it about?

Change in the educational context of Latvia is focused on a competency-based approach that causes a challenge also for teaching music. Therefore, it is important to look for meaningful connections across different subject areas and the components of the curriculum that are common in different subjects. Teachers of 1st graders work as a team to create and implement the teaching and learning process. The study proves the following benefits: 1) successive acquisition of the study content by using children's knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in different subjects, 2) providing connections between different subjects and systematizing the acquired knowledge..

Why is it important?

Our findings show that teachers must be able to collaborate with other colleagues, analyze, reflect, support, learn together with the children to implement meaningful learning activities. The study offers and example of music curriculum for the 1st grades beginning that focuses on the integrity of music and other subjects and reflects on the benefits, necessity, and topicality of such a plan for each subject teacher.

Perspectives

I hope that this article will encourage teachers to learn from each other and the example of the part of the curriculum will inspire them to collaborate to help children to acquire necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
