What is it about?

In this article, we investigate different factors contributing to dielectric breakdown in liquid xenon when the medium is exposed to a high electric field. In addition, we show tentative evidence for bubble nucleation being the originating mechanism of breakdown in the liquid.

Why is it important?

Dielectric breakdown in time projection chambers (TPCs) is a cause of great concern: it could damage the detector and jeopardize the experimental technique that these detectors are based on. Therefore, the characterization of dielectric breakdown in noble liquids, especially in liquid xenon (LXe), is of great importance. The results presented in this article may help guide the design of TPCs for next-generation experiments searching for dark matter or neutrinos.
