What is it about?

Plasma is a (partially) ionized gas that has a variety of promising applications. Knowledge of ionization i.e. the creation of electrons and ionization in the plasma is fundamentally important. We have determined experimentally the value for the coefficient that characterizes ionization in plasmas.

Why is it important?

Ar:O2 plasmas are important in a variety of applications such functionalization of surfaces, plasma-enhaced ALD sterilization and cleaning of surfaces and/or food. We have measured an important parameter required for modelling of these plasmas- the effective ionization coefficient and compared the measurements with simple calculations.

Perspectives

Exact knowledge of ionization in Ar:O2 plasmas enables creation of more accurate models which are desirable for applications e.g. in the field of plasma medicine.
