What is it about?

An x-ray detector concept consisting of a synthetic single crystal diamond which is only in mechanical contact with a piezoelectric lithium niobate (LiNbO3) surface acoustic wave (SAW) delay line. Radiation induced changes in conductivity are being detected by the electrical field of SAW that penetrates into the diamond.

Why is it important?

The SAW detection principle offers the unique possibility for wireless interrogation (remote sensing) which is specifically favorable in harsh environment, i.e. space travelling and radiation facilities.

Perspectives

We hope that this advancement will trigger more investigation towards the usage of SAW/diamond combination for radiation detection! Furthermore, major advancements could be achieved from well known components of the past, simply by using them differently!
