What is it about?
This paper shows that reinforcement by floating columns is a viable foundation solution for reinforcement of soft clay deposits. Based on a prescribed admissible long term-settlement, results show that the classical-safer reinforcement by end-bearing columns is unnecessary. The results relie on the consideration of the time of residual long-term settlement of the unreinforced layer(s). Along with this, each optimized length of foating columns is associated to an optimized area ratio, determined for the reinforced soil-mass based, rather, of the total admissible short-term settlement (Bouassida and Carter, 2014 & Bouassida & Hazzar, 2012).

Why is it important?
Analysis method is valid for the reinforcement by a group of floating granular columns located in any arrangment under a rigid raft, or footing.
