What is it about?

This paper presents the corrected development of viscous boundary efficiency initially proposed by Lysmer and Kuhlemeyer. The expressions of the energy ratio are given, in accordance with the original numerical results, and confirm the authors’ recommendations to minimize the reflected energy of body waves that impinge on the artificial boundary.

Why is it important?

With these corrections, the efficiency of viscous boundaries is underlined and the choice of the dimensionless parameters a and b is confirmed. A check of the correctness of the energy ratio confirms the contributions of Lysmer and Kuhlemeyer in wave-propagation modeling in an infinite solid using the finite-element method. The effect of Poisson’s ratio on the boundary efficiency is also analyzed, especially in the case of incompressible material.
