What is it about?

Research has demonstrated that Secured by Design (SBD) is an effective crime reduction measure, but how long does that crime reductive effect last? This paper re-visits a sample of developments in West Yorkshire, England to establish the extent to which the crime reduction benefits demonstrated over a decade before have been sustained.

Why is it important?

Secured by Design (SBD) is an effective crime reduction measure - this has been demonstrated through analysis of police recorded and self reported crime data. But to what extent is that crime reduction effect sustained? This paper explores a sample of SBD developments over a period of ten years to assess the extent to which the crime reduction benefits have been sustained.

Perspectives

Research has demonstrated that Secured by Design reduces crime and the fear of crime, but previous evaluations had only explored this over a three year period. This research revisits a sample of developments in West Yorkshire to ascertain the extent to which the crime reduction benefits seen a decade before had been sustained.
