What is it about?

New Urban Management (2015) discusses how the logic of economic flows - i.e. flows of capital, know-how, talent, and tourists - posses a challenge to local governments throughout the world. The idea is that local governments should take such a new condition into account in their economic development policy.

Why is it important?

The topic discussed in New Urban Management is important simply because in the globalised world the open local economies are essentially hubs of flows or dissipative structures, which is not always understood by local actors even if they operate in such an environment. A paradigm shift from place-centered view to 'flow paradigm' requires deeper understanding of the ontology of such a social reality. Another theme that characterises the book is its focus on the increased importance of attractiveness of a city in such a fluid economy. And lastly, the book shows that under such circumstances city branding becomes increasingly important aspect of local economic development. Hence the title of the book: New Urban Management: Attracting value flows to branded hubs.

Perspectives

The idea of this book was first briefly presented in The Polical Economy of City Branding (2014). I found it fascinating, and decided to drill deeper into 'flow paradigm', which eventually became a new book, New Urban Management (2015). This particular work is important also for my teaching, as in advanced studies one of my courses is about 'Global Governance Relations of Local and Regional Governments'.
