What is it about?

This study intends to investigate the implications of oil wealth for pay inequality in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries that produce oil, for the period 1980–2008. To this end, the study analyzes the trends in and determinants of the Theil index, which is a measure of earnings inequality computed by the University of Texas Inequality Project (UTIP) utilizing industrial, regional and sectoral data. In addition, other determinants of inequality, such as per capita GDP, openness, urbanization, population, industry share and institutional quality, are controlled for in the analysis. The results reveal that oil revenues have not been seized as an opportunity to correct pay inequalities in the region’s countries.
