What is it about?

The Abwehr and the SD locked horns early on in their parallel existence. In this chapter we learn how the rivalry gradually became a war of attrition which only the SD could win, because of the increasing suspicion with which the Führer viewed Canaris, Oster, and their nationalist officers, and because of the ascendancy of Himmler and the SS within the Reich.

Why is it important?

Perspectives

This chapter shows yet again how Hitler's 'divide-and-rule' policy enabled him to retain power.
