What is it about?

This paper explores the relationship between crime prevention and sustainability - can houses incorporate both features of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and sustainable design. The research found that the two can be compatible - designing sustainability via security, however, some features of crime prevention were not compatible with sustainable housing design.

Why is it important?

Crime prevention in housing design may be a priority for police, Crime Prevention Design Advisors and Designing out Crime Officers, but it is by no means the priority for those working within planning and development control. This paper explores housing design from the perspectives of crime prevention and sustainability and looks at where the two agendas are aligned and where they are in conflict.

Perspectives

This is a great paper that takes a different look at crime prevention through environmental design within housing. Can sustainable design and secure design work together or are there conflicts between the two agendas?
