What is it about?

This book explores the politics borne of consumption through the case of coffee activism and ethical consumption. It analyses the agencies, structures, repertoires and technologies of promotion and participation in the politics of fair trade consumption through an exploration of the relationship between activism and consumption.

Why is it important?

Political life is increasingly mediated by consumer culture; to understand the politics of consumption is to understand the way in which participation fosters a hybrid identity in citizen consumers where market trends and consumer agency influence the forms of development and social change in the context of neoliberalism.

Perspectives

I am interested in analysing tendencies and tensions in consumer politics as informed by political science, cultural studies and communications. Ongoing work I have undertaken has focused on consumer politics and nationalism, as well as resistance through and against advertising and anti-consumerism.
