What is it about?

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was developed in Japan for treatment of early gastrointestinal tumors. The procedure is difficult to learn for Western endoscopists as there are limited Western ESD experts to teach the technique. We evaluated the role of having Japanese ESD experts supervise ESD training of two Western endoscopists in a porcine model through a video based system. Both endoscopists were able to achieve competency in ESD technique within 25 procedures.

Why is it important?

Endoscopic submucosal dissection is a minimally invasive technique that is able to remove early gastrointestinal cancers from patients, while allowing them to keep there native organ (esophagus, stomach, colon), and avoid surgery. Despite its benefits practice of the technique in the West has been limited by difficulty learning the technique from Japanese experts. ESD training under video based supervision from Japanese ESD experts is a practical and effective method for Western endoscopists to learn ESD.

Perspectives

Increasing the number of endoscopists performing high quality ESD in the West is important so our patients can benefit from this minimally invasive technique for early gastrointestinal cancer. I hope the findings of our study can help contribute to the dissemination of ESD technique.
