What is it about?

Emergency Departments utilization by outpatients with nonurgent medical conditions increases in Germany as in many countries worldwide. A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews was conducted at Charité Berlin to analyse patients' motifs. Study results indicate an independent function of EDs in outpatient care, visited by patients with due to better time-flexibility, the ability of multidisciplinary care at one visit and higher medical quality of care.

Why is it important?

The increasing number of patients with non-urgent conditions leads to crowding at EDs, which may impair the health care for emergency patients.

Perspectives

I aim to contribute a German perspective to thebroad international research of ED utilization with low urgency problems. Furthermore, I would like to add knowledge to the German debate about improving the fragmented health System.
