Why is it important?

Lymph nodes are present in the mesenterium of the bowel and are the first station for metastases from colorectal cancer (CRC). Lymph nodes may also be enlarged in Crohn`s disease, or be non- metastatic in CRC. If this Method could be used to differentiate the non-metastatic from the metastatic nodes, it could be a metod to evaluate tumor stage per- or intraoperatively.

Perspectives

We found a difference between the metastatic and non-metastatic nodes on a Group Level. For the evaluation of individual nodes, the overlap between normal and metastatic lymph nodes was substantial, which limit the use of this method in a clinical setting. One important limitation is that this study was performed in devascularized tissue, which may influence the elasticity measurement compared to live tissue.
