What is it about?

Athletic movements such as acceleration, short sprints and horizontal jumping require horizontal force production. We have shown for the first time that it is not just the amount of force applied to the ground that is important to successfully perform such movements, but the way that the force is applied is just as, if not more, important. Correct application of force results in a more optimal performance outcome.

Why is it important?

The development of correct force application could help an athlete produce greater horizontal forces during sporting/athletic activities, resulting in more desirable performance. Horizontal jumping with handheld load is a practical training tool which can be included in training by a strength and conditioning coach, trainer or athlete.
