We summarize the available evidence surrounding tracheostomy, including benefits, timing of placement, and issues of communication about placement. We address many issues relating to prolonged mechanical ventilation and chronic critical illness.

Why is it important?

This relatively small population of patients accounts for a large portion of ICU, hospital, and community resources. A better understanding of the appropriate approach to these patients is critical to improve the care we provide.
