What is it about?

In this study, it is feasible to sample coronary sinus (venous system of heart) blood and measure its anaesthetic agent's concentrations.

Why is it important?

This was the first study in which coronary sinus blood was sampled and measured for isoflurane concentration. The coronary sinus isoflurane concentration could be estimated from the isoflurane concentration in the oxygenator exhaust gas. However, the value of this relationship is limited because the coronary sinus isoflurane concentration does not accurately represent its myocardial levels during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Perspectives

In this study, we have successfully demonstrated that it is possible to sample coronary sinus blood retrogradely and measure for its isoflurane concentration in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
