What is it about?

PAN nanofiber is important for many applications such as producing carbon nanofibers for aerospace applications, air and water filtration system, and biomedical applications. Enhancing the PAN nanofibers mat structural stability and improving its mechanical properties are the main target for researcher. This paper introduce a new approach to produce a novel structure with high surface area of interfused nanofiber network in scalability production and without post processing.

Why is it important?

This paper introduce a facile approach to develop highly crosslinked and interfused web of electrospun fibers in a single step multiple-needle electrospinning. It allows for direct (one-step) fabrication of high surface area interfused nanofiber network without post processing. The new method can enhance the mat structural and mechanical properties by allowing the load to fully transfer between the fibers through their strong junctions instead of transferring the load from one fiber to another along their physical contact points, via adhesion and friction. This unique fiber structure can have significant implications on producing strong carbon nanofibers mat as well as improving fiber applications for air and water filtering, where structural integrity of the filter matters.

Perspectives

We foresee a wide variety of significant applications for this novel structure in filtration and producing carbon nanofibers mat with better structural stability and higher mechanical properties.
