What is it about?

The paper provides an evaluation of the origins of radar target signature aspect dependence. Once the origins are established, a feature extraction process that is robust to the aspect dependency is proposed and validated on experimental data.

Why is it important?

Robustness to the target's radar signature significantly increases classification accuracy. It also increases confidence that it is true target information being used in the classification and not radar processing artifacts.

Perspectives

Feature extraction is a key part of radar target recognition that is often overlooked in favour of application of advanced classifiers. However, with the right features, simple classifiers are highly effective. Here the challenge of target aspect dependence in the features is addressed. Critically, the relationship between physical radar phenomena and the features' aspect dependence and extraction is considered.
