What is it about?

A mathematical model has been built using Mixed Integer Linear programming, to minimize the total annual costs associated with the energy supply of a hospital. The solution of the model provides the equipment to be installed (commercially available) as well as how to operate it throughout the year, as the energy demands vary throughout the day and throughout the year too (seasons). The usual issue is dealing with the integration of renewables, due to the intermittency and variability.

Why is it important?

The installation of new energy systems and the optimization of these projects require a real and comprehensive analysis from different viewpoints: technical, economic, environmental, etc., and should also reflect, as closely as possible, the actual conditions of use.

Perspectives

Due to the high degree of integration and coupling, determining the optimal configuration and design of a polygeneration energy system is quite a challenging task. This manuscript addressed complex problems that have not been fully confronted as of yet, such as the integration with renewable energy technologies. This study is part of a wider project, which included a MSc. thesis in Renewable Energy, which explored optimization and economic and environmental aspects separately.
