What is it about?

This article explains an improvement to our wind energy converter control systems that enables them to participate more effectively in preventing blackouts following a major power plant failure. The rotating masses of the wind energy converter act as a "battery" that can supply extra power to arrest a frequency decline. Our improvement helps them to re-accelerate in a power-system friendly way following such an event.

Why is it important?

Wind energy converters form an ever larger part of power generation in many countries across the world. This places requirements on them to help support the grid (frequency and voltage) during emergencies. By designing the converter controls in an intelligent way, we can contribute to system stability and thereby enable higher amounts of wind energy in power systems worldwide!
