What is it about?

This paper presents a zero DC voltage ride through scheme for the hybrid MMCs, where HBSMs participate actively instead of being bypassed. This method benefits maintain the capacitor voltages of HBSMs, and it is easy to be realized.

Why is it important?

Compared with the available DC fault ride through (DC-FRT) scheme, the proposed DC-FRT scheme with HBSMs participated enhances the controllability of HBSMs capacitor voltages. It benefits the hybrid MMC riding through a DC fault with relative long fault period, such as permanent DC fault. Thus, it may be a simple and promising DC-FRT scheme for engineering applications.

Perspectives

The limitations of DC-FRT scheme with HBSMs bypassed are elaborated. And, a general DC-FRT scheme considering the redundancy of the arm generation scheme under a reduced dc-link voltage is drived. Then, an interesting DC-FRT scheme using HBSMs actively during the zero DC fault is proposed.
