What is it about?

We use data captured by laser from aircraft (LiDAR) to obtain information about building roof features (tilt, azimuth and area). This information is important for the optimum location of solar panels. Building characteristics are extracted for a single city and statistically scaled-up to cover the whole UK.

Why is it important?

Building roof characteristics are important for domestic photovoltaic installations because they have a significant impact on quantity, timing and seasonality of energy produced.

Perspectives

This publication presents a validated and reproducible method of deriving roof characteristics. The technique is based on publicly available data, is relatively simple and provides fast scale-up.
