What is it about?

This novel architecture can be used as rotor and stator wheel structures in a permanent magnet electrical machine. It combines stacked spoke-and-rim laminations with a circular array of crossing tubes to form structures that exhibit excellent static structural performance and improved dynamic behaviors with minimal weight. The improved dynamic behaviors can be attributed to the friction between the steel laminations, which increases damping.

Why is it important?

Electrical machinery must be very large to deliver high powers at lower speeds of rotation. For example, one 8 MW direct drive generator used in wind turbines is 12 meters in diameter and weighs 250 tonne. Using the lightweight wheel structures presented here could reduce this mass to 200 tonne. The reduced weight reduces cost for manufacture, logistics, and installation.
