What is it about?

Induction motors commonly used in Electric cars, electric locomotives and industrial processes need to run at variable speed, and are driven by high-power circuits called drives. This paper presents a new circuit topology with fewer components and generates a smoother output voltage, which in turn makes the motor (or generator) accelerate or run smoothly (without jerks).

Why is it important?

Induction motors (and generators) are the industry workhorses. 70% of the electricity generated passes through induction machines at some point. Induction motors are used for traction (electric trains, cars, buses), in industries (milling, rolling, grinding, etc), and even in Wind and Hydro-based power generation. Hence better drives for induction machines (motors and generators) have a huge impact.
