What is it about?

This paper proposes a simple scheme for detecting the occurrence of non-uniform irradiance on series-connected photovoltaic modules. For this scheme, only one pair of voltage and current sensors is required per string. The proposed algorithm is very suitable for the popular string inverter topology.

Why is it important?

Existing literature uses complicated techniques such as thermal imaging for detection of partial shading in a PV string. This paper, however, does not use any extra sensors except one voltage and current sensor each, which are, by default, available in any MPPT tracking system.
