Medical image compression is an importantant aspect in medical imaing, especially the compression of medical image sequences. We have proposed an fast 3D SPIHT algorithm by seperating the zero-tree structure based on 3D integer DWT.

Why is it important?
With the development of medical imaging, the resolution and size of medical image are becoming larger. The compression of medical image is more time-consuming than natural images, so fast compression is important for medical image.
Perspectives
Based on the 3D integer DWT, we proposed a fast 3D SPIHT algorithm by seperating the zero-tree structure. For size images of 512 × 512, the encoding time saving is around 37% and the decoding time saving is around 48% compared with the original 3D SPIHT. The higher the bit rate, the better the performance of the proposed algorithm.
