What is it about?

Trams demands high power during acceleration (when leaving a station), power demand significantly drops after acceleration phase. A short contact line from a stopping station (Accelerating Contact Line) supplies power to the tram during acceleration, then the tram draws power from the on-board energy storage device(s)

Why is it important?

The Accelerating Contact Line (ACL) idea reduces the size and cost of the on-board energy storage with very little /negligible visual impact, just as the normal tram without overhead lines. The on-board energy storage devices (OBESDs) are currently costly, for example, the cost of an electric car is merely contributed by the OBESD.

Perspectives

The simple and easy to implement accelerating contact lines (ACLs) significantly reduce the required size of the on-board energy storage device (OBESD). As the number of trams on a given route increases, the idea of ACLs becomes more appealing.
