What is it about?

By online magnetizing and demagnetizing permanent magnet material, a novel magnetic variable gear with 16 sets of gear ratios has been developed for hybrid vehicles so as to fulfill different driving requirements and road conditions. Consequently, it is extended to electronic-continuously variable transmission for hybrid propulsion.

Why is it important?

The proposed magnetic variable gear can readily replace the existing mechanical variable gear, which can fundamentally solve the long-term problems of bulky size, heavy weight and high transmission loss associated with the mechanical variable gear.

Perspectives

I hope this article can stimulate more researchers working on magnetic gears.
