What is it about?

Visible Light Communications (VLC) systems have begun to permeate all areas of our daily life. It can be used for a wide range of short and medium range communication including WPAN, WLAN and WBANs, Indoor Positioning, Vehicular Networks, and Underwater Applications. VLC based on Angle Diversity Receiver (ADR) facilitates higher bandwidth reuse and therefore higher data density.

Why is it important?

The contribution of this work is to present a new optical receiver design that can achieve the following targets: (1) The overall capacity of down-link VLC network can be maximized by reallocating the same optical spectrum among neighboring transmitters (frequency reuse factor of one) while solving the low bandwidth utilization efficiency problem of OFDM technique. (2) The LOS CCI can be completely mitigated and the ISI can be significantly reduced without enhancing the noise components which cannot be attained by the conventional ADR model with zero forcing (ZF) algorithm (ADR-ZF). (3) A highly uncorrelated channel gain matrix can be obtained, outperforming the conventional ADR model, which in turns provides a high signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and facilitates the implementation of multiple access and reliable resource allocation techniques. (4) The connectivity of users can be surly guaranteed and the total number of downlink channel assigned to each one can be maximized at all positions and orientations which enables the full user mobility and facilitates the handover between different transmitters.
