What is it about?

A fingerprint preprocessing technique is proposed for contrast enhancement of poor quality fingerprints, prior to orientation field estimation. It improves the visibility of ridges by binarization.

Why is it important?

First, the proposed technique, reliably, extracts ridges in large regions of low quality. Second, it does not require a segmentation algorithm to separate fingerprint region from unclear background.
