What is it about?

Many researchers have been making wrong assumptions about the energy models of wireless sensors when validating their research. We present results from measurements of commonly used wireless sensor nodes/devices that show the real energy consumption behaviour.

Why is it important?

Past research has been making inaccurate assumptions regarding energy models for wireless sensors in the validation process. These realistic energy models that we present can help researchers when they validate their protocol designs for wireless sensor networks.

Perspectives

After researching on wireless sensor networks for many years, and finding that actual prototypes perform differently from the simulation results led me to question the accuracy of energy models that we have adopted, based on published work and manufacturers datasheets. We decided to measure the actual energy consumption for different modes of a typical wireless sensor to determine the true energy usage model. This paper shares the results from our measurement study.
