What is it about?
Self envelope-tracking is one of power amplifier design techniques to improve the power efficiency while maintaining simple implementation. This work introduces a novel circuit, which for the first time demonstrates a 40-MHz modulation bandwidth with self envelope-tracking. Envelope-tracking works like the automatic transmission system of automobiles, continuously providing the exact amount of power for the radio-frequency signal emission. This typically results in more than 50% improvement in power efficiency compared to power amplifiers without envelope-tracking.

Why is it important?
Conventional envelope-tracking power amplifiers commonly suffer from additional cost and complexity for dynamic supply voltage modulation that are necessary to realize the envelope-tracking operation. Recently, self-envelope tracking techniques were introduced, which can achieve a comparable power efficiency while significantly reducing cost and complexity to realize envelope tracking.
