Why is it important?

Subwavelength grating waveguides and devices in silicon-on-insulator have recently attracted significant interest and indeed, a number of functionalities such as directional coupling and waveguide crossings have been realized. Previously, we proposed subwavelength grating filter devices based on Bragg reflection; however, only simulation results were presented. In this paper, we report on the realization of subwavelength grating Bragg grating filters in SOI. The devices exhibit reasonably high reflectivity (> 90%), narrow bandwidth (0.5 nm), and are compact; they should serve as effective building blocks for more complex devices based on subwavelength gratings.
