What is it about?

Inserting medical needles into the human body is a critical task. This paper examines ways to support that task using augmented reality glasses. Different approaches were compared and the achievable accuracy measured.

Why is it important?

Our work presents a convenient to use and fast to set up AR navigation system prototype. It forms the basis of a system that can hopefully improve the workflow of spinal needle injections. Visualisation techniques were compared in a user study and several experiments were conducted to assess the used optical marker registration approach.

Perspectives

Working on this project is my share of improving interventionalists' and patients' conditions during minimally invasive surgery. To me, trying to support people working in the healthcare domain is a great and important research field and I hope this work can help to build future systems.
