What is it about?
For HFPT insulations, surface discharge is a serious problem. Polyimide (PI) is a widely used insulating material for HFPT’s. We studied surface discharge phenomenon on Polyimide. This paper first time used the fluid-kinetic model by adopting the finite element simulation method to address the micro-level study of surface discharge. This paper aimed at the discharge phenomenon of the PI under the direct action of high-frequency sinusoidal voltage.

Why is it important?
There is no prominent study with high-frequency sinusoidal voltage, so this paper studied the numerical simulation of surface discharge over PI insulation of the HFPT under high-frequency sinusoidal voltage and validated with experimental results. Our findings analysed the characteristics of surface discharge under sinusoidal voltage and discussed factors that influence the surface discharge of PI insulation.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. This article also lead to High frequency insulation's groups contacting me and ultimately to a greater involvement in High frequency insulation's research.
