What is it about?

How should we differentiate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) from language impairment (LI)? Do children with both ADHD and LI have more severe/different symptoms than children with specific language impairment (SLI)? What can studying ADHD tell us about the mechanisms underlying LI? How does comorbidity impact service provision? This review evaluates the extent to which the current evidence base can address these important questions and identifies critical gaps in our understanding.

Why is it important?

ADHD represents a ubiquitous neurodevelopmental disorder and children with both LI and ADHD appear with regularity on practitioner caseloads. Differentiating symptoms caused by ADHD from those associated with LI is critical to ensuring children receive appropriate interventions.
