What is it about?

Eighty disyllabic word items were selected in accordance with IRT. The speech-recognition abilities of the 376 young participants with various hearing abilities are reported. The IRT analyses on this set of data are also discussed. A new set of speech-recognition test materials in Cantonese Chinese has been developed for children with various hearing abilities, who are at the age of 3 years or above.

Construction of short equivalent lists may be performed in accordance with IRT item qualities. Clinical applications of this test tool in the particular language population are discussed.

We hope the discussion of the development and validation processes of a speech recognition test in the audiology field, may help the clinicians better understand the psychometric characteristics of the various speech recognition tests that we routinely use in our clinical practices
